Mozambique is a vast nation in Southeast Africa that is rich in both cultural heritage and natural attractions. The long coastline bordering the Indian Ocean ensures white sandy beaches that are perfect for relaxing, and the sprawling countryside in the North is home to many wildlife reserves and parks. Mozambique is one of the best countries you can visit in Africa, and here are some hidden gems that you should explore when visiting this beautiful country,

Ilha de Moçambique

Ilha de Moçambique, which translates to Mozambique Island, is at the top of this list for good reason. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a small island in Nampula that was developed by the Portuguese back in the early 16th century to use as a base for their Asian trading network. The proof of this occupation remains in the well-preserved colonial buildings, such as the Fort of Sao Sebastion and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte. The Fort of Sao Sebastion is the oldest surviving fort in Sub-Saharan Africa and is surrounded by picturesque views of the Indian Ocean. The fort harbours many historical artefacts that showcase Mozambique's rich historical background. A fun fact to note is that the town does not have access to portable water, and residents still use a system that was built by the Portuguese in the 17th century to get water. This system collects rainwater and uses a series of channels and pipes to store it in a cistern in the basement of the fort. So don't be alarmed when you see locals lining up with containers at the fort.

Limpopo National Park

Limpopo National Parl sits along the border with South Africa and Zimbabwe and forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, which also includes Kruger National Park in South Africa and Gonatezhou National Park in Zimbabwe. The animals are allowed to travel between the borders of the countries, and wildlife enthusiasts gain a chance to enjoy this rare natural phenomenon. Limpopo National Park is a sight to see with an area spanning over 10000 kilometres. The natural landscape features lush riverine forests, expansive savannahs and rugged mountains. The area also boasts an impressive variety of fauna, including leopards, buffalos and antelopes. The park also provides a habitat for numerous species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

Niassa Reserve

Niassa Reserve, situated in the Niassa Province, is one of Africa's largest protected wilderness areas, covering approximately 42,000 square kilometres. The reserve is a critical biodiversity hotspot, accommodating one of the largest elephant populations in Mozambique and an African wild dog population of over 350. The African wild dog is an endangered animal with only an estimated global population of 8000.
Another hidden gem in the Niassa Province is Lake Niassa. Lake Niassa, more popularly known as Lake Malawi, is located between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania and is the fourth-largest freshwater lake in the world. The lake is meromictic ( a unique occurrence where the water layers do not mix) and is surrounded by stunning beaches. This makes it the ideal spot for water activities such as kayaking, diving and snorkelling.

Bazaruto Archipelago

The Bazaruto Archipelago, located off the coast of Vilanculos, is a stunning cluster of six islands that form a protected marine national park. The park boasts spectacular beaches with crystal clear waters and teeming coral reefs. Visitors can indulge in various activities, such as riding traditional dhow boats and deep-sea fishing. Whale watching is a recommended activity, especially during the migration season when humpback whales regularly visit the waters. The archipelago is home to the luxurious Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort, which epitomizes the Mozambique luxury beach resorts experience, offering world-class amenities and unparalleled service.
