Travelling to Chiang Rai is a great way to experience the beauty and heritage of North Central Thailand. Known for its unique temples, river cruises and traditional Thai lifestyle, there are many wonderful attractions to see. This Thai town is off the beaten track, if you’re looking for something a little different. Here are some of the best ways to experience its cultural gems:

Visit the White Temple

One of the best attractions in Chaing Rai is the White Temple. It is also called Wat Rong Khun and has an eye-catching facade and religious motifs. Although it's not located in the city centre, you’ll find it on the main road from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. Once you arrive, you’ll have a chance to explore this breathtaking temple which reflects the history of the Lanna Kingdom. However, it is not an ancient monument! It was designed in the 1990s by a local artist. The main features include the Gate of Heaven at the entrance, which demonstrates the balance between good and evil, and the main Ubosot building, which is decorated with mirrors.

Head to Baan Dam Museum

The Baan Dam Museum is also known as the Black House Museum. It showcases architectural structures from the ancient Lanna period as well as contemporary designs. You’ll come upon it as you travel north from Chiang Rai. At the museum, visitors will have a chance to view almost 40 unique structures. One of the highlights is the Main Sanctuary Hall which has been compared to Chiang Rai's famous White Temple - though this building has dark wood and muted tones. Also check out the Small Temple, which is a combination of Thai and Burmese architectural styles. Another attraction is the Tri Phum, a three-sided building decorated with carved wooden pillars.

Explore the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar

The Chiang Rai Night Bazaar is a bustling hub in downtown Chiang Rai. It is accessible from most hotels in the city and is situated on the main Phaholyothin Road. The market is in full swing after the sun sets. It’s a great place to experience the cultural heart of the city. Witness vendors selling a variety of products from electronics, handicrafts, clothing and more. Watch the street performers and explore the lively stalls. Adding to the exciting atmosphere are the food stalls selling Thai street food, where you can try mouthwatering items like BBQ squid.

Views from Buffalo Horn Hill

Buffalo Horn Hill is situated in the southern part of Chiang Rai. It’s a famous spot for admiring the stunning views of the area, with a medium-high vantage point. To reach it, you can take a tuk along the old Chiang Mai road. Follow the path to the summit. Once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with incredible 180-degree views of the surroundings. Witness the city of Chiang Rai and the far-off karst peaks of Nam Ha. It is also home to Wat Phrathat Doi Khao Kwai, an eye-catching temple with a golden top, which is said to be the abode of a bear-like creature from Thai legends.

Embark on a Mekong River Cruise

Navigate the beauty of the Mekong River with a riverboat cruise. The river is located just north of the city and visitors can embark on a boat tour in traditional Mekong-style longboats. This will take you past the green hills on the borders of Laos and Burma. Soak in the serene atmosphere, wilderness and lush forests as you glide past the villages of Tha Ton and Chiang Rai. You can find Chiang Rai excursions offered by top hotels in the area, such as Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort.

Witness Pong Phra Bat Waterfall

Found within the Lam Nam Kok Forest Park, the Pong Phra Bat Waterfall is a must-see attraction for visitors to Chiang Rai. Found northwest of the city, this beautiful region is covered in thick jungles and mountains. Travellers will need to hike 2 kilometres, so go prepared. However, it is worth it, as you will be greeted by the amazing beauty of the waterfall. While it may not be the largest waterfall in Thailand, Pong Phra Bat is a marvellous sight. It’s a great place for capturing photographs, with ancient trees of all types.
