Here's everything you need to know to plan the perfect road trip in Oman.

Why Choose Oman for a Road Trip?

There are many reasons as to why the beautiful country of Oman is so ideal for road tripping.  A main factor is the presence of safe and well built and maintained roads. The amazing scenery and hospitable local populace are also addons to this. The terrain around the Omani roads differ from rugged mountains to the sand dunes. The presence of many ancient forts and traditional buildings makes exploring an interesting task. Enjoy hiking, dune bashing, snorkelling, and off-road driving while on your road trip.

Planning Your Oman Road Trip

Best Time to Visit

The best time for a road trip on the open Omani highways is during the months of October and April, when temperatures tend to be cooler and outdoor activities are more enjoyable. The peak summer months, June to August, should be avoided at all costs, as temperatures can exceed 45°C, making driving and sightseeing uncomfortable.

Renting a Car in Oman

A self-drive trip is the best way to explore Oman, and renting a car is relatively easy. Opt for a standard sedan if you are planning to drive along cities and coastal roads, but if you plan to explore the mountains or desert, a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Most international licences are accepted, but it’s advisable to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP). Fuel is cheap in Oman, and petrol stations are available in most areas, but plan refuelling stops in advance for remote locations.

Suggested 2-Day Road Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Muscat to Jebel Akhdar

The best place to start your journey is in Muscat, and make your way to Jebel Akhdar, known as the green mountain. This place is ideal to stay for the night because you can lodge at an Oman resort there. It is a 2.5-hour drive, covering around 150km. The Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar will be the ideal place to crash for the night after a long drive, especially with its luxurious offerings at affordable rates. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and Mutrah Souq are great places you can visit before you start your road trip.

Day 2: Jebel Akhdar to Nizwa

Continue your journey to Nizwa, one of Oman’s most historic cities. It is located 50km away and will take around an hour to reach. Both the Nizwa Fort and Souq are great places to visit on your trip. You can end your journey there and return to Muscat or continue further.

Packing Essentials for an Oman Road Trip

Consider what to pack to make your trip smooth and comfortable. Start by packing light and breathable clothing for the day and layers for the mountain. Comfortable hiking or trekking shoes are a must. It is advisable to download offline maps, just in case Google Maps doesn’t work. Pack a basic first aid kit as well as a power bank for those tight moments when your battery is almost drained.

Safety Tips for Driving in Oman

To ensure a safe and enjoyable road trip, travel safely. Oman has strict speed regulations, and speed cameras are common, so ensure that you follow the rules at all times. In rural areas, camels often wander onto the roads unexpectedly, so make sure to pay close attention to the road. Roads can be poorly lit, and visibility in desert areas is low after dark. Make sure to always check on your vehicle as well.
